Gardening as Prayer

For me, there is something profound at work in gardening. Perhaps it is because plant life was created by God and when we work with plants we sense a closeness to Him, our wonderful Creator.

I encourage you to try it.

I am Karin Vollbrecht, Team Leader for NEBC's Gardening Team. On this site you will be able to see what our team is doing around the grounds including before and after photos! Additionally, there is a link to see what items are welcome as donations.

RAIN!!!!!

Well, it has been a tough Summer enduring the drought but the plants held tough and they are now looking great after some much needed rain!  Soon, I will be organizing a meeting to get to know the wonderful people who have volunteered and schedule some workdays with some hopefully cooler weather.  I can't wait to start on the next phase!!!

1st Phase ECM Building - Families come out to Plant!

We had five families volunteer and come out to help plant, mulch, and water the new plants.  What a joy to have the Mom's, Dad's and children working together in the outdoors and serving!  Thank you to Dave who lovingly supports his wife and the Gardening Team and my children, Ava and Dylan, who put in many hours with their Mom at the church.  A BIG thank you to our volunteers who worked so hard:  Dawn Lindley, Avery Lindley, Jack Lindley, Luke Lindley, Leni Pattison, Preston Pattison, Ryder Pattison, Ruby Pattison, Liz Joseph, Hannon Joseph, Parker Joseph, Brady Joseph, Maren Joseph, Melissa Fitzgerald, Brock Fitzgerald, Emmy Fitzgerald, Kyle Anderson, Maggie Anderson, Molly Anderson, and last but certainly not least, Nick Martine.  All holes were dug and plants put in, watered, and topped with mulch! Now we will keep an eye on the beds and plants and the next phase is going to begin.

Dirt prep for planting!

Friday, March 18, 2011 our dirt came and we spread it out amongst the flowerbeds that have been prepared.  Thank you to Dave, Nick Martine, and Dylan for helping to spread the dirt Friday evening under the new lights!  Also many thanks to the Yard Dogs in response to the call for help on Saturday; your willingness to help the Gardening Team was very much appreciated!

Lindley's Volunteer!

Today we had our first volunteers come out.  Thank you Lindley's for helping the Gardening Team to clear mulch out of the beds and pull some weeds.  What a BIG help you all were!  We really enjoyed having the help and the fellowship.  Dawn, Avery, Jack, and Luke made the work fly by and we got so much accomplished!  Dave replaced the sprinkler system for the flowerbeds and we are all set.  Next, we will be getting dirt to be put into the beds, planting plants, and mulching the new plants soon!

Starting Up

As some of you might have noticed, weather permitted us to go out on Sunday, February 13th and do some work in the beds.  Dave, the kids, and myself worked on getting the grass and old mulch out of the two front and two of the side beds exposing some of the existing sprinklers.  We piled up the old mulch into Dave's pickup and hauled it over and put it out lining the sidewalk which enters the building next to the kids playground.  The kids enjoyed helping and being outdoors and my husband Dave was a trooper supporting and helping me.  I am looking forward to continually cleaning out the beds along the side of the building and Dave will be revising the sprinkler system to suit our planting.  Since the weather should be getting more adaptable to being outdoors I will be scheduling some days for work, hope you can make it!

News

Well, the last month has been horrible on my allergies which has kept me indoors and unable to work on the church grounds like I had planned.  Hopefully in the upcoming months I will be able to continue the work I have already begun.  I began by going around the church grounds and coming up with a plan including plant selection.  Our first phase will be working in the flowerbeds around the Early Education Building.  I am currently cleaning out the weeds and grass and preparing the beds for planting hopefully in February.  I have been talking with Roger Hastings who has agreed to help me in the areas of looking at the sprinklers to make sure they are working properly.  All this being said, as soon as the weather and my allergies permit me to do so, I will be heading up to the church to continue weeding and taking out the grass in the flowerbeds around the EEB.  If you would like to get involved, please contact me either on this blog or by email at karin.vollbrecht@gmail.com
